Time, space, and criticality for embryonic patterning

Paul Francois

Embryonic development is a dynamical process, combining growth and patterning controlled by specific oscillating gene regulatory networks. In this talk, I will describe recent experimental and theoretical advances on the understanding of segmentation, the process at the basis of the formation of structure such as vertebrae. In particular, I will show how the observed propagating waves of genetic expression in embryos relate to dynamical systems concepts such as criticality.
